Streetwise runs a weekly music Workshop Programme in 11 homeless centres around the country – we also stage an annual production which gives our performers the chance to star in quality shows where there are high-expectations, no compromise and no patronising.

Mission Statement

Streetwise Opera’s mission is to give homeless and formerly homeless people opportunities to further their personal development through participation in music making of the highest professional quality and to promote more positive attitudes towards homeless people

Aims

• To produce musical work of a professional standard so that participants benefit from being involved in something of quality; this includes staging at least one major professional music theatre production each year aimed at making a national impact
• To develop the creativity, self-esteem, confidence, social networks, enjoyment and skills of homeless and formerly homeless people through regular music workshops and related activities that provide a welcoming, safe and non-judgmental environment
• To demonstrate through the development of these qualities and skills, positive changes in the lives of participants depending on their circumstances. For some this may mean further engagement with homeless agency services, living with more independence or enrolling in work experience
• To help create positive attitudes and understanding of homelessness amongst the general public and policy makers and to mitigate the social exclusion felt by participants
• To establish the work of Streetwise Opera as widely as possible around the UK and beyond
