Apply now to Streetwise Opera’s Composers in Residence scheme

Award-winning national charity Streetwise Opera is excited to announce its Composers in Residence scheme for 2018-2019, supported by PRS Foundation. We will commission five composers to develop five short operatic choruses that will be dramatised for performance during our Opera Hour season in spring 2019.

We will select one composer for each of the five the regions where Streetwise Opera runs its programmes: Greater London, Greater Manchester, Nottingham, Teesside and Tyneside.

The texts for the commissions will be inspired by the theme “Community and Belonging”, and written in collaboration with our performers through a process of experimentation and exploration, allowing them to make creative decisions and feel a sense of ownership over the final piece.

The residencies provide rich professional development opportunities for emerging or mid-career composers with a keen interest in opera. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to gain broad experience of the life of Streetwise Opera, an award-winning commissioning and producing opera company that works with people who have experienced or are at risk of homelessness.

Mark Oldfield, Artistic Director of Workshops at Streetwise Opera, said:

‘We are excited about finding composers who will create new pieces that will inspire and challenge our performers, while helping us celebrate the communities that we engage with throughout England.’

Anna Appleby, Streetwise Opera Composer in Residence 2016-2017, said:

‘The whole experience from start to finish has been really positive and I think I’ve enjoyed it the whole way through and the amount of mentorship we’ve had… that was a really great experience for me as well and I feel like it’s been beneficial for everyone involved. So it’s been a learning process for me as well as for the performers.’

Each composer will receive a fee of £1,000. Applications are open from 24 May to 1 July 2018. To apply, go to www.streetwiseopera.org/composers-in-residence-2018-2019.
