Composer in Residence announced

We are delighted to announce that Stef Conner has been appointed as the Streetwise Opera PRSF Composer in Residence. She will be working with us for two years and will produce two brand new commissions; a Streetwise Opera anthem to add to our regular performance repertoire and a section of our next opera production.

Stef said:

"I'm full of admiration for what Streetwise Opera have achieved so far and thrilled to be part of the next chapter. It will be an honor to work with an organization that not only impacts positively on the lives of people who have experienced homelessness, but also greatly enriches the world of contemporary opera by bringing together a wider range of perspectives, breaking down social barriers and expanding creative possibilities - I cannot imagine a more inspiring reason to compose music."

Whether instrumental or vocal, Stef’s work is influenced by the musicality of language and vocal expressions of human emotion.

Having graduated with a starred first from York University, she went on to complete a master's degree in Jazz and Improvised Music and subsequently a doctorate.

In 2007 she joined the Northumbrian folk group The Unthanks and performed at such venues as The Royal Opera House, Glastonbury, Womad, the BBC Folk Awards and the Mercury Music Awards. Whilst playing with the group she was lucky enough to support (and often perform with) some inspiring pop and folk artists, including Billy Bragg, Adele and Ben Folds. Her approach to music-making was deeply affected by The Unthanks' sensitive and honest style of musical storytelling.

Winner of the RPS Composition Prize and ISM Composers' Competition, Stef has had works premiered at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, The Royal Festival Hall, Cheltenham Festival and Beijing Conservatory, as well as broadcasts on BBC Radio 2 and 3.

Performers of her work include The Kreutzer Quartet, Juice, The Nieuw Ensemble, Cadenza and The Philharmonia Orchestra and she is part of the Making Music/Sound and Music 'Adopt-a-Composer' Scheme.

We look forward to welcoming her to the team and to her visiting the workshop groups over the next few months to get to know everyone. Huge thank you to the folks at Sound and Music and PRSF for thier invaluable help with the recruitment and selection process.
