Streetwise Opera and Royal Northern Sinfonia present a Tyneside #LoveOpera, featuring a range of classical, folk, pop and contemporary music.

Tina has never been in love. Now she’s the bridesmaid at her sister’s wedding and can’t move for relatives asking ‘When is it going to be you?’ But Tina insists she’s better off on her own. If you haven’t got love you can’t lose it, right? Yet as the wedding day unfolds her determination not to let anyone in starts to falter…

Tina isn’t from the quietest family and this isn’t exactly a low-key wedding. Rather, everyone has something to say and a tale to tell. Her sister, her dad, the best man and even her nan break out in soulful song and family secrets are revealed, truths rise to the surface and old passions are aired. With all these swirling emotions in the air, will Tina finally dare to jump in at the deep end of life?

Tell Me The Truth About Love delves into the history of love across the generations of one Tyneside family. The opera takes its title from one of Benjamin Britten’s Cabaret Songs, with lyrics by W.H. Auden. New music is being created by composers Will Todd and Anna Appleby, and local songs like Jimmy Nail’s Big River and Katherine Tickell’s version of The Waters of Tyne are also included.

Tell Me The Truth About Love is directed by Olivier Award-winning director Bijan Sheibani and designed by Linbury Prize-winning designer Samal Blak, with story and text by Meriel Sheibani-Clare, with additional text by Streetwise Opera performers.

Celebrating Streetwise Opera’s 15th anniversary, the production will be performed by adults from Streetwise Opera Newcastle Gateshead who have experienced, or are at risk of, homelessness, alongside musicians from Royal Northern Sinfonia.

The opera is produced by Streetwise Opera in partnership with Sage Gateshead, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, ReCoCo and Changing Lives, with media partner BBC Newcastle.

Tell Me The Truth About Love is supported by Arts Council England, Foyle Foundation, The Harold Hyam Wingate Foundation, and The Austin & Hope Pilkington Trust.
