Streetwise Opera is seeking Trustees

Streetwise Opera is an award-winning charity that uses music to help people make positive changes in their lives. Working with people who have experienced, or are at risk of, homelessness, we run workshop programmes across England and stage critically-acclaimed operas.

Our productions platform the skills of our performers in a professional arena, showing that whatever life throws at them, they can achieve great things. Underpinning these, our workshop programme offers a dependable source of creativity in lives where everything else can be changing.

Streetwise Opera also runs With One Voice, an international movement which seeks to build the arts and homelessness sector globally through exchanges in policy and practice.

Our next production, Tell Me The Truth About Love, directed by Olivier Award-winning Bijan Sheibani and presented in collaboration with the Royal Northern Sinfonia, will be taking place at Sage Gateshead on 14 and 15 April 2018.

As we embark on our new Strategic Plan, Streetwise Opera is looking for up to four Trustees with the skills, knowledge and experience to support excellent governance and oversight. We welcome applications both from people who have previous experience of board-level governance, and those who do not.

As with all charity trustees, these are unpaid roles but Streetwise Opera will cover out-of-pocket expenses. We value diversity in our work and welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, particularly those who have experienced homelessness.

Role of the Trustee

Key responsibilities of the Trustees include:

  1. Working with their fellow Board members and Streetwise Opera staff to promote the charity's vision and values
  2. Contribute to the strategic direction of the charity - setting overall policy, defining goals and evaluating performance against agreed targets
  3. Exercising expert judgement and scrutiny of Streetwise Opera by reading board papers, attending Board and, where appropriate, subcommittee meetings
  4. Participating in decision-making, risk management and control to protect the charity, its participants, staff and volunteers
  5. Ensuring integrity and legal compliance, ensuring public trust in the charity's work
  6. Supporting the Co-Executive Directors, Artistic Director and wider staff team, where appropriate

Trustee meetings take place four times a year in central London, usually in the early evening. A strategic planning evening also takes place annually. Trustees may also be invited to join Board subcommittees and to attend recruitment interviews, as well as performances and other public events.

Potential trustees should read the Charity Commission guidance "The essential trustee - what you need to know, what you need to do" (CC3).

Qualities required

We welcome applications from candidates with the relevant skills and expertise to undertake the role effectively, who have empathy with people who have experienced homelessness, and who are eligible to act as a charity trustee.

We are particularly looking for:

A Treasurer
A trustee with legal experience
A trustee with experience of leadership within an arts organisation
A trustee with experience of connecting with high-net-worth individuals
