Towards Another World

Sunday 26 November (3:15pm)
V&A Museum, London

Members of Streetwise Opera London take part in this English National Opera community project inspired by Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida.

This performance is the culmination of an ENO Baylis community project, and is part of the programme of activity celebrating the V&A’s exhibition Opera: Passion, Power, Politics.

The project explores the key Aida themes of love, duty, loyalty, cultural identity and belonging to create a new work that combines Verdi’s music with original material created in collaboration with project participants. It brings together a community chorus of 100 young people and adults from across London, including members of the ENO Baylis youth programme, ENO Community Choir, Streetwise Opera and adult English language learners from Tower Hamlets and Bromley by Bow Community Centre.

The final piece combines original text and music created by participating community groups in collaboration with the project creative team, extracts from Verdi’s opera Aida, and original text and music by composer Hannah Conway and writer Peter Cant.

The community chorus will be joined by soprano Mari Wyn Williams and bass-baritone Keel Watson. Costume elements for the community chorus have been created by over 100 young people taking part in National Art & Design Saturday Clubs at the University of the Arts, London.

This is a free public event and there is no need to reserve a ticket or book your place – please come and join us on the day.
