Training day for artists in Wales, 11-12 July

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012 | News

Streetwise Opera and WNO Max have formed a new partnership to bring Streetwise Opera to Cardiff and to kick off this fantastic collaboration we are offering a free two-day training course, sharing our expertise in using music to support vulnerable adults. The course is aimed at singers, animateurs, musicians and directors with some vocal experience who wish to gain skills in working with homeless and other vulnerable people using opera. The sessions will be led by Streetwise Opera’s highly experienced Artistic Director (Workshops), Rowan Fenner.

The day will explore:

  • Why opera is a powerful art-form for homeless people and vulnerable adults and how to approach it
  • The use of improvisation and devised work
  • Skills-based exercises and warm-ups
  • How to manage differing needs within the group
  • How to manage opening up people’s emotions
  • Why engaging in this work raises self-esteem

Feedback from past training participants

“I found the training day very informative and fun; the ease with which Rowan taught and involved us in the Streetwise toolkit gave the day a dynamic approach that was especially useful for anyone not regularly used to singing and facilitating singers”

“Understanding how much the participants gain from the sessions affirms that we are all definitely on the right track to want to engage people with opera, as it can have a very powerful impact on the way that people see themselves and on their level of self-esteem”
